Midwest native Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) arrives in 1922 New York in search of the American dream.īuild huge forts, find loot and squad up with friends to earn your Victory Royale. Nick, a would-be writer, moves in next-door to millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and across the bay from his cousin Daisy (Carey Mulligan) and her philandering husband, Tom (Joel Edgerton). Thus, Nick becomes drawn into the captivating world of the wealthy and - as he bears witness to their illusions and deceits - pens a tale of impossible love, dreams, and tragedy. Rating: PG-13 (Partying|Brief Language|Sexual Content|Smoking|Some Violent Images) I was thoroughly unimpressed in more ways than one with Baz Lurhmann's take on one of the nation's greatest novels, The Great Gatsby. Considering Lurhmann has had moderate success with Moulin Rouge! and Romeo & Juliet (where he worked with DiCaprio before) it's disappointing how this adaptation could fall so flat with such powerful stars. While the movie sticks to the source material for the most part, I didn't need the narration from Tobey Maguire the entire time like I was actually reading the book. First, I have never been completely sold on Maguire. I don't think he's a bad actor, but he didn't give any characterization to Nick Carraway. The same goes for most of the actors in this film, including DiCaprio. Nobody's performance deserves any special attention because it felt so cookie-cutter that you might have thought the actors were only showing emotion because of the punctuation on the script they were reading. I know this was a few years ago, but Leo was coming off some of his best movies, and then this interrupted one of the better strings of successful movies for him. Carey Mulligan is always a delight on screen, but other than crying, sobbing or appearing confused, there wasn't much else for her to do. ![]() Nothing came together for me while I was watching. Parents need to know that Steven Spielberg's classic, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, is one of the greatest family films ever made. Its themes of loyalty, trust, and caring are affecting and easy to understand, and Elliott and E.T.'s extraordinary friendship is one of cinema's most enduring. Some scenes of peril and danger may be too intense for very young kids, and the moments leading to a key character's apparent death will be emotional for just about everyone. ![]() Brief strong language includes "s-t" and "son of a bitch," as well as an insult that includes "penis," and use of the slur "redskin" during a reading of Peter Pan. There's a bit of squabbling among siblings, and E.T. and Elliott both get and act tipsy in one comically memorable scene. A 2002 edition replaced a scene that used guns with walkie-talkies, though that sparked a fair bit of backlash, and the guns returned for the film's 30th anniversary in 2012. The film lacks diversity, but its portrayal of a single mother remains commendable.
